Including a 20mm average outside slab you will need a depth of 150mm.
Which consists of 80mm for hard core type 1 aggregate, 50mm for cement base and then the 20mm for the slab. All together makes 150mm.
Some factors can change this depending on what ground is being worked with!
- For example if you are replacing an old patio but there is already type 1 hard core in place and already at the correct depth it would be a waste to pull it out and replace so saving money. If the ground is prone to water logging! drainage and a deeper depth of hard core may be needed. All this will be determined by the survey.
- In 2025 we have seen more rain fall in shorter spaces of time, which is something to consider with your drainage whether its how quick the run off is on your slabs or what drainage is use to get the water away from your property.
A lot of driveways can be seen to have the bowling effect / sinking or collapses! This is normally down to the depth of hard core is not deep enough & has not been compacted down enough so can not take the weight of your vehicles.
How ever you finish you driveway, stone, brick weave or resin including everything the depth needs to be at least 200mm dug down from bottom to finish height.
- For example if its a stone drive way 130mm of type one hard core compacted, 50mm of hoggin again compacted for water absorption and to hold in the stone, then 20mm of stone.
Some times you see driveways with 50 to 60mm of stone and the cars are sinking in and its a struggle to walk through! Obviously that depth of stone is too much.
- Talk to your contractor about these depths & if they are not saying similar I would be questioning the reason to why!? Are they trying to save you money or themselves?
You want your job to last! better to get it done correct 1st time than another tradesman have to start over again and cost you twice.
Sometime mould can be the thorn in our side we find hard to remove! There are many ways mould can intrude into our homes and here are some ways you can fight back!
Internally
- Air flow is a big problem and in the winter months we tend to shut all windows and gaps to keep as much heat in our homes as possible! Our homes need an air flow in every room and if you have trickle vents installed on your windows make sure they are cracked. Since June 2022, trickle vents have become mandatory for most replacement window in the UK. This is because modern, energy-efficient windows can sometimes be too airtight, trapping moisture and pollutants inside. Trickle vents ensure proper ventilation even when windows are closed. If your windows do not have trickle vents we can install them for you and they are not a massive expense to you the customer.
Simply opening a window for 30 mins a day could seriously reduce the chances of mould building!
- This might sound obvious but having your heating on through the winter months to keep an ambient temperature of 18 degrees will help reduce mould. With more house holds struggling to heat their homes going into 2025 with the energy crisis and cost of living! this might mean more families and homes can not afford to heat the space! Instead of having the heating on all the time turn it on in intervals and don't have the heating on when no one is at home. There maybe help from government schemes or your local council, alternately speak to your energy supplier they will be able to assist.
- Damp getting in behind units? try leaving more of a gap behind so air can circulate, mini de humidifiers can be put in rooms or wardrobes to help catch excess moisture, but don't forget them check them regularly and when the crystals / beads have done their job and full of water dispose of them correctly and replace.
- Purchase a portable humidity meter for around £5 - £10. Place in the middle of your home or in the problem area and you can observe whether the humidity is improving. In winter months between 30 - 50% to help prevent condensation and in the summer months between 40 - 60% this also helps improve health. Anything above 60% in the winter there is too much water in the atmosphere and action is need to reduce the level.
